Five direct-booking leaks to find before buying more website traffic.

Test the route from availability search to confirmed stay, capture the evidence and repair the largest verified leak first.

Evidence route

One real journey. Five checks.

  1. 01
    Search

Can the guest find a suitable stay?

  2. 02
    Price

    Does the total stay clear?

  3. 03
    Checkout

    Can mobile guests finish?

  4. 04
    Payment

    Is the commitment understood?

  5. 05
    Confirm

    Do guest and team agree?

Observe
Capture
Prioritise

The short answer.

Do not judge the website from the homepage. Run a representative mobile booking, record each decision and compare the guest’s final state with the team’s booking record. A failed check with observable evidence is a stronger priority than a general redesign opinion.

Interactive checklist

Pass what you can prove.

Use one real booking scenario first. Tick a check only when the guest journey, booking record or captured evidence demonstrates it.

The five leaks

Follow the guest, not the org chart.

Each leak crosses website, booking technology and park operations. Test the whole handoff before assigning a fix.

01

Availability search

Common symptom

Guests click Book Now but do not reach suitable, bookable options.

Test scenario
Start on a high-intent accommodation page. Search a popular family stay and a constrained stay, such as a touring pitch with electric hook-up and a pet.
Evidence to capture
Mobile screen recording, search inputs, returned results, no-availability message and the URL or campaign source.
What good looks like
The booking action is obvious, dates and party survive each step, suitable live options appear and an empty result gives a truthful next action.

Measure
Search starts and searches with suitable results
02

Pricing clarity

Common symptom

The attractive first price changes materially when the guest reaches checkout.

Test scenario
Price the same stay with two party sizes, one optional extra and every unavoidable charge. Repeat after changing a date.
Evidence to capture
Screenshots of the first price, result total, extras, checkout total and the exact inputs used.
What good looks like
The calculable total is prominent, required and optional charges are distinct, and changes update before the guest commits to payment.

03

Checkout friction

Common symptom

Guests start a booking but repeatedly stop on details, terms or mobile form steps.

Test scenario
Complete the journey on a narrow phone without autofill. Make one deliberate field error and then correct it.
Evidence to capture
Step count, required fields, field errors, lost inputs, blocked controls and time to complete.
What good looks like
Controls remain readable, only necessary information is required, errors explain the fix and previous answers remain intact.

Website, booking system and operations
Measure
Mobile booking-start to payment-attempt rate
04

Deposit and payment

Common symptom

The guest is unsure what will be charged, when the balance is due or what happened after a failed attempt.

Test scenario
Test a deposit booking, a full-payment booking and the safe failure or cancellation path available in your payment environment.
Evidence to capture
Amount due, stay total, balance date, policy link, payment status and recovery instructions.
What good looks like
The guest knows the total and today’s charge before paying, sees the balance terms and can recover without creating duplicate uncertainty.
Owner
Finance, operations and booking system
Measure
Payment-attempt to confirmed-booking rate
05

Confirmation and follow-up

Common symptom

Payment appears successful, but the guest or team lacks a complete, matching reservation record.

Test scenario
Compare the final screen, email, payment record and staff booking view for the same test reservation.
Evidence to capture
Booking reference, stay details, paid and due amounts, timestamps, next steps and staff-visible status.
What good looks like
Every surface agrees on the reservation, payment state and next action, with a clear route to correct a genuine problem.
Owner
Operations, finance and booking system
Measure
Confirmed bookings needing manual clarification
Two checks worth separating

Price clarity and page speed need their own evidence.

Neither a fast page nor a compliant-looking price proves that guests can complete the journey. Test both inside the same representative booking.

Show the calculable total clearly

Current UK price-transparency guidance says the total price should normally include unavoidable or mandatory charges. Where the total cannot yet be calculated, the way it is calculated should be prominent. Apply the guidance to your circumstances and take legal advice where needed.

Use field data for real-world performance

Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report groups real-world page experience around loading, responsiveness and visual stability. Google’s current good thresholds are LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP within 200 milliseconds and CLS at 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile.

Evidence log

Write down what happened, not what you expected.

Keep the scenario stable, capture the source and give the next action one owner. This makes the next audit comparable.

Fix first

High impact, high confidence

Prioritise a failed step when the evidence is repeatable, the affected traffic is meaningful and the fix is likely to remove a real barrier.

Do not confuse

Opinion, seasonality and causation

Annotate release dates and compare the same funnel step. A busier week or a different traffic mix is not proof that a design change worked.

From leak to commercial case

Repair the journey, then model the channel opportunity.

Once the largest verified leak is addressed, use your own OTA revenue, commission and direct-channel costs to test whether a change in channel mix makes commercial sense.

Audit questions

Direct-booking website audit FAQ.

What is a direct-booking website audit?

It is a structured test of the route from a guest landing on your website to receiving a confirmed reservation. This audit checks availability search, pricing clarity, checkout friction, payment and confirmation using representative booking scenarios and recorded evidence.

How often should an accommodation website be audited?

Run the core scenarios after meaningful website, pricing, booking-system or payment changes, and before a major campaign or peak booking period. A lighter monthly check can catch broken links, outdated prices and mobile problems.

Will more website traffic fix a low booking conversion rate?

Usually not by itself. More qualified traffic can create more bookings, but it also sends more guests through the same weak steps. Find and repair the largest evidenced leak before increasing spend.

What should be tested on mobile?

Test Book Now visibility, date and party selection, results, price changes, forms, validation, payment and confirmation on a narrow phone. Use realistic parties, restrictions and extras rather than the easiest possible booking.

What counts as clear accommodation pricing?

Guests should understand the total they will need to pay, what is included, which extras are optional, what is due now and when any balance becomes due. Unavoidable charges should not appear as a surprise at the end.

Should the audit include telephone bookings?

Keep telephone and online conversion measures separate, but include the operational handoff. Staff should see the same availability, price, payment state and confirmed reservation that the guest sees online.
